Waymo Expands Autonomous Service to San Antonio International Airport

Waymo, the company specializing in fully autonomous vehicles, announced a significant service expansion in San Antonio on Tuesday. This new phase now incorporates transportation services connecting riders directly to and from the San Antonio International Airport (SAT).

A Waymo spokesperson confirmed that this development makes the company the first fully autonomous ride service provider offering airport transportation within Texas. This capability has been highly anticipated by local users.

Key Details on Airport Access

Arica Gately, Waymo’s head of airport partnerships and business development, highlighted the importance of this new route. "Providing a safe and reliable ride to and from the airport is one of the most requested uses for Waymo riders, and we’re proud to bring that capability to San Antonians," Gately stated.

The logistics for airport travel have been clearly defined. Passengers needing to depart will be dropped off directly at the terminal’s curbside. Conversely, pickups for arriving passengers are scheduled to occur within the designated rideshare areas.

Connecting the San Antonio Transportation Network

Gately further emphasized the broader impact of this integration. "Waymo works closely with communities to meet the diverse needs of residents and expanding access to San Antonio International Airport will serve as a key connection to the region’s transportation network," she noted.

Currently, Waymo’s operational area in San Antonio spans over 60 square miles. This service coverage area includes major regional points of interest.

  • Downtown and the River Walk

Broader Company Expansion Efforts

The launch of airport service in San Antonio is part of a larger strategic growth plan for Waymo. The company is simultaneously welcoming the public to utilize its fully autonomous ride-hailing services in other major metropolitan areas.

These other expanding markets include Dallas, Houston, and Orlando. This simultaneous rollout underscores Waymo's commitment to scaling its driverless technology across the nation.
