Buffett Maintains Stance on Billions Donated to Gates Foundation
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett stated he holds no regrets regarding the tens of billions of dollars in stock he has donated to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This assertion comes despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the close relationship between Bill Gates and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Speaking to CNBC on Tuesday, Buffett acknowledged the difficult situation, saying, “I wish that certain things hadn’t happened.” However, he defended the Foundation's operations, noting, “It isn”t like they’re stealing money for themselves.”
Scale of Buffett's Philanthropy
As of 2022, the Gates Foundation reported that Buffett's total donations amounted to $36 billion. He has continued to make annual contributions since that time.
The fate of his next scheduled donation, due in June, remains undecided at this point. Buffett has been a significant donor to the Foundation for many years.
Epstein Scandal Revelations and Gates' Response
Recent document releases by the Justice Department, comprising over three million pages, have shed light on the interactions between Gates and Epstein. These documents reportedly include emails detailing coordinated meetings and discussions about Gates' philanthropic endeavors.
The released materials also allegedly contain comments from Epstein suggesting sexual misconduct by Gates. Bill Gates has reportedly apologized to Foundation staff for his association with Epstein, labeling the relationship “a huge mistake.” He has strongly refuted the personal wrongdoing claims, calling them “false.”
Buffett Halts Communication with Close Friend Gates
Significantly, all documented interactions between Gates and Epstein occurred after Epstein's 2008 conviction on prostitution-related charges. Warren Buffett confirmed that he never met or had any contact with Jeffrey Epstein himself.
Buffett also revealed that he has stopped speaking with Bill Gates, who has been a close friend for years, regarding the scandal. “We’ve had great times together,” Buffett remarked.
He explained his current silence, stating, “But I think until it gets cleared up, I just don’t think it makes sense to do a lot of talking.” A key reason for this distance is his desire to avoid being subpoenaed, as he added, “I don’t want to be under oath.”
