Utah County Fire Department Aids Nebraska Wildfire Efforts
Another team of firefighters from Utah County has been dispatched to Nebraska to support crews battling ongoing wildfires. This marks the fourth out-of-state deployment for the department this year, occurring even before the official start of Utah’s fire season.
Fourth Deployment This Year
The Utah County Fire Department announced the deployment in a Facebook post this week, stating their teams are “gearing up to be ready to respond to the call for aid and are happy to help others in their time of need.” The department has also provided mutual aid to Texas earlier this year to combat wildfires.
Nebraska Wildfires: Extent of the Damage
Utah County Fire Captain Dakota Summers confirmed he and two other firefighters arrived in Bertrand, Nebraska, on Tuesday. They are providing assistance to local crews who are “spread thin” fighting multiple wildfires that have collectively burned over 800,000 acres, according to the Nebraska governor’s office. Tragically, one person died while attempting to escape the flames, as reported by NBC News.
Challenging Conditions in Nebraska
Captain Summers explained the fires have spread rapidly due to strong winds and the presence of light fuel. “They’ve been having quite a few these past few weeks,” he said. “Some have gotten pretty large just because of the wind out here, and it’s light fuel, so the wind just kind of takes it.”
Mutual Aid and Collaboration
The Utah crew is scheduled to remain in Nebraska for two weeks, replacing a team that recently returned from a similar deployment. Captain Summers emphasized the importance of collaboration between fire departments. “We’re all on the same team – one big family – and so we try to help out wherever we can,” he stated. “Being able to go nationally helps us kind of broaden that family and just help us to build relationships with other departments.”
Preparing for a Busy Season at Home
Looking ahead, Captain Summers anticipates a challenging fire season in Utah due to dry conditions resulting from a limited winter snowfall. “It’s definitely going to keep us busy, keep us on our toes,” he said. The Utah County firefighters are expected to return from Nebraska in a few weeks.
