Trump Hints at Imminent Iran Exit
President Donald Trump indicated on Wednesday that the United States could withdraw from the conflict in Iran “very soon,” potentially within weeks, even without a formal agreement. He stated, “We’ll be leaving very soon,” adding that this could occur “within two weeks, maybe two weeks, maybe three.”
No Deal Necessary for US Withdrawal
When questioned about whether successful diplomacy was a prerequisite for ending “Operation Epic Fury,” Trump responded, “Iran doesn’t have to make a deal, no.” This statement underscores a shifting approach from Washington regarding the conflict, which has resulted in thousands of casualties and significant energy disruption.
Threats to Leave NATO Alliance
Alongside the potential Iran exit, Trump escalated threats to pull the United States out of the NATO defense alliance. He criticized NATO as a “paper tiger,” stating, “I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.” He indicated he had moved beyond simply reconsidering U.S. membership.
Strait of Hormuz Concerns
Trump’s threat to leave NATO is linked to European states not assisting in preventing Iran from blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy shipping route. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that global oil supplies are expected to be impacted twice as severely this month as they were in March.
Oil Supply Disruption and Economic Impact
IEA head Fatih Birol explained that the primary impact of Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz has been a shortage of jet fuel and diesel, initially in Asia, but expected to reach Europe in April or May. He anticipates the oil loss in April will be double that of March. Businesses worldwide, including the cosmetics and tea industries, are already experiencing negative consequences.
US Demands and Potential Meeting
The United States previously demanded Iran adhere to a 15-point ceasefire framework, including ceasing nuclear weapons and uranium enrichment efforts and fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Senator Marco Rubio suggested the possibility of a “direct meeting at some point” and indicated the U.S. could “see the finish line.”
Upcoming Presidential Address
The White House announced that President Trump will address the nation at 9 p.m. EDT on Wednesday “to provide an important update on Iran.”
