Violent Incident Shakes Chicago's Near North Side

Police launched an investigation early Tuesday following a shooting and subsequent crash that resulted in two injuries near the iconic Magnificent Mile area on Chicago's Near North Side.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:27 p.m. on Monday evening. Authorities reported that a 22-year-old man was operating a red sedan when an assailant in a white sport-utility vehicle approached and discharged several rounds.

Details of the Shooting and Collision

The red sedan sustained multiple bullet impacts, though the 22-year-old driver avoided physical injury from the gunfire. Following the shooting, the driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle.

The out-of-control sedan subsequently collided with a parked car, which was then pushed into a 52-year-old pedestrian standing nearby. Separately, a 25-year-old woman walking in the vicinity was struck by a bullet in her thigh.

Victim Status and Scene Evidence

The woman who was shot in the thigh was transported to Northwestern Hospital, where she is expected to make a full recovery. The pedestrian struck by the vehicle was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The pedestrian sustained leg injuries and was initially reported to be in fair condition. Video evidence captured at the scene displayed several damaged vehicles, including the red sedan, a black SUV, and the white SUV involved.

Furthermore, the footage indicated that two bullet holes were visible in the window of Stan's Donuts, located down the street at 750 N. Rush St.

Witness Reaction to the Aftermath

A local resident, Erin McDougald, described hearing the gunfire before descending from her high-floor apartment to witness the scene.

"We took the elevator down, like, we're on a very high floor," McDougald stated, "and by the time we came down we were seeing the blue lights from the police."

Belmont Area detectives were actively conducting their investigation into the shooting incident on Tuesday morning.
