Michigan State University’s standout goaltender, Trey Augustine, is moving to the professional level. He has officially signed a deal with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, as announced by both MSU and the Red Wings on Tuesday.

Augustine's Path to the NHL

Augustine will initially report to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins on an amateur tryout (ATO) for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. His three-year, entry-level contract with Detroit will commence with the 2026-27 season.

Dominant Performance at MSU

Over the past three seasons as the Spartans’ starting goalie, Augustine has achieved a remarkable 66-25-7 record, translating to a .709 winning percentage. His performance consistently improved, with a save percentage rising from .915 in his freshman year to .924 as a sophomore and culminating in .929 as a junior.

From Commitment Flip to NHL Draft Pick

Augustine’s journey wasn’t without its twists. Originally committed to the University of Michigan, he switched his commitment to Michigan State in September 2022. The Detroit Red Wings then selected him with the 41st overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, securing his rights.

Future of Spartans Goaltending

Michigan State has a clear plan for its goaltending future. The Spartans have secured a commitment from Benjamin Ravensbergen, a former first-round pick (30th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2025 NHL Draft). Ravensbergen, from Vancouver, Canada, recently completed a successful playoff run with the Prince George Cougars, boasting a .919 save percentage and a 32-13-0 record.

Depth in Net

Michigan State also has Melvin Strahl, who served as the team’s backup this past season. Strahl was drafted 156th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023 and recorded a 2-0-1 record with a .922 save percentage in three games this season.
