Katsumi Opens in Logan Circle
A popular Logan Circle establishment has undergone a significant transformation, emerging as Katsumi in mid-February. The restaurant features a new aesthetic, including plum velvet couches and pink neon lighting, alongside a lively atmosphere enhanced by weekend DJs.
A Focus on Innovation, Not Tradition
Despite its modern ambiance, Katsumi retains a key element from its predecessor: the absence of a traditional sushi counter. This allows Chef Uchino to focus on creative dishes and experiment with flavors. The restaurant has been consistently busy since its opening.
Standout Dishes and Culinary Creativity
Katsumi’s menu showcases inventive rolls, such as one featuring caviar, black porgy, and crispy potato bits – inspired by sour-cream-and-onion chips. Another popular choice combines escolar and avocado with scallion tempura and scallion oil. Chef Uchino’s tuna tartare, topped with a quail egg, is also receiving praise.
Traditional Offerings and Bar Snacks
Alongside the innovative creations, Katsumi offers well-executed nigiri with classic ingredients like toro, uni, and A5 Wagyu. The restaurant’s rice is perfectly vinegared, reminiscent of the quality found at Nakazawa.
Beyond Sushi: A Diverse Menu
Chef Jhony Bautista, a Kappo alum, oversees a menu of bar snacks, noodles, and skewers. Highlights include oblong gyoza filled with minced beef and cabbage, ultra-crunchy pork katsu, and tempura-fried rock shrimp with honey-miso mayo. However, the yuzu-scented shishitos were described as soggy.
Service Considerations
While the food is highly regarded, diners have noted that dishes sometimes arrive all at once, creating a crowded table arrangement. This has been likened to a challenging game of “table Tetris.”
