Bronx Man Fatally Shot by Police
A man was shot and killed by police officers in the Bronx on Thursday morning, officials confirmed. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. at a location on 105 Willis Ave.
Details of the Encounter
Police were responding to an active search warrant for a 44-year-old man. According to a morning press conference, officers gained access to the location with the assistance of a woman who resided there.
Initial Findings
Upon entering, officers found the man seated on a bed holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers immediately instructed him to show his hands and he acknowledged possessing a gun.
The Shooting
Authorities stated the encounter lasted approximately a minute and a half. During this time, officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon. The man was ultimately shot once in the face.
Aftermath and Investigation
The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. It remains unclear if the firearm was a real handgun or a replica, such as a BB gun.
Prior Criminal History
Investigators have not yet determined if the man pointed the weapon at the officers. Police records indicate the man was on parole for a 1997 rape conviction and a 2013 murder conviction. He also had a history of prior arrests and had failed to comply with Level 3 sex offender registration requirements.
