Ioniq 5 Defies EV Market Trends
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is bucking the trend of slowing electric vehicle sales in the United States. While many automakers have reported declining EV numbers, the American-made Ioniq 5 has experienced significant growth, posting double-digit sales increases.
Record First Quarter for Hyundai
Hyundai Motor America reported its best-ever first-quarter sales results in the U.S., largely driven by the success of the Ioniq 5 electric crossover. The Ioniq 5, with a starting price of $36,600, saw substantial gains in both March and the first quarter, proving the appeal of a well-positioned EV.
Sales Figures Show Strong Performance
In March, Hyundai sold 4,425 Ioniq 5s, a 13% increase compared to the same month last year. First-quarter sales reached 9,970 units, representing a 14% year-over-year jump. While not exceptionally high, these figures outperform some competitors and even certain Hyundai gasoline-powered models.
Ioniq Lineup Performance
The Ioniq 5 is currently Hyundai’s best-selling EV in the U.S. market. In contrast, the Ioniq 9 SUV recorded 1,990 sales in the first quarter, while the Ioniq 6 sedan struggled with only 829 units sold – a 75% decrease year-over-year.
Ioniq 6 Discontinued
Due to the Ioniq 6’s poor performance, Hyundai discontinued regular trims of the model in the U.S. last month, now offering only the high-performance Ioniq 6 N. The Ioniq 5’s affordability, being $1,250 cheaper than the Ioniq 6, and its practical features, such as increased trunk space and a roomier cabin, likely contribute to its popularity.
Overall Hyundai Sales
Overall, Hyundai’s U.S. sales increased by 1% in the first quarter, reaching 205,338 units. However, March sales experienced a 3% decline, totaling 84,087 vehicles.
