Houston Cougars Focus on Future Quarterbacks

With spring practice underway and preparations for the 2026 season in progress, the Houston Cougars are simultaneously active in high school recruiting. Head coach Willie Fritz and his staff are evaluating the current squad while also laying the groundwork for future success.

Cougars Target Three-Star QB Jerry Meyer

The Cougars are reportedly prioritizing quarterback recruiting for the 2027 class. According to an expert prediction, Houston is poised to land three-star quarterback Jerry Meyer from Waxahachie High School.

Meyer's Recruiting Profile

Meyer is ranked as the No. 58 quarterback prospect in the 2027 cycle by 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. He is also the No. 128 overall prospect in the state of Texas and ranks No. 966 nationally.

Competition for Meyer's Commitment

Several programs are competing for Meyer’s commitment. Other schools that have extended offers include TCU, Baylor, Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Nebraska, and Purdue.

Meyer's High School Stats

Meyer recently completed his junior season with 2,754 passing yards, a 63.3% completion rate, 33 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions. He previously earned Texas District 11-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors after throwing for 3,308 yards, 29 touchdowns, and six interceptions during his sophomore year.

Looking Beyond 2026

The Cougars already have a strong quarterback situation for the 2026 season with Conner Weigman returning as the starter. Incoming five-star freshman Keisean Henderson, ranked No. 1 in the 2026 class by 247Sports, adds further depth. However, the coaching staff recognizes the importance of building a strong quarterback room for years to come, and Meyer could be a key piece of that future.
