Disney+ Expands European Footprint with Key Italian Partnership
Disney+ has finalized a significant content collaboration with the major European state broadcaster, RAI, in Italy. This agreement marks the latest move in Disney+'s strategy to partner with free-to-air broadcasters across Europe.
This deal is particularly noteworthy as it follows closely on the heels of a similar arrangement established with Spain's RTVE just last week. Both agreements share a crucial element: bringing content to the streaming platform immediately following its initial linear television airing.
Immediate Streaming for Popular RAI Content
Under the terms of the new partnership, specific programs aired on RAI 2 will become accessible to Disney+ subscribers in Italy the very next day. These programs will be featured in a dedicated collection launching soon on the Italian version of the Disney+ service.
For instance, the program hosted this year by Gabriele Vagnato and Paola Perego will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting the day after it airs on RAI 2. This ensures rapid access for the streamer's local audience.
Strategic Value of Broadcaster Collaborations
Disney executives view these content-sharing agreements as mutually beneficial arrangements. They emphasize that major free-to-air channels continue to attract the largest viewership numbers and produce high-budget, popular programming.
These collaborations enable Disney+ to supplement its global content library with highly relevant local programming. Conversely, the broadcasters gain access to younger demographics through the Disney streaming platform.
Executive Commentary on the RAI Deal
Karl Holmes, General Manager for Disney+ EMEA, expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership. He stated that the collaboration with RAI will significantly enhance the selection of iconic local shows available to Disney+ customers in Italy.
Holmes highlighted RAI's long-standing connection with Italian viewers and its heritage of quality storytelling. "We are proud to bring them to our audience on Disney+," he remarked.
He further noted that this initiative builds upon more than 40 years of existing collaboration between Disney and RAI in Italy. The goal remains consistent: supporting free-to-air broadcasters in reaching wider audiences while offering Disney+ subscribers more local entertainment options.
