Avalanche Explode for Nine Goals in Dominating Victory Over Flames

The Colorado Avalanche secured a commanding 9-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday night in Denver. The win was spearheaded by an explosive first period that saw the Avalanche net five goals and rack up 26 shots on net.

Nazem Kadri, facing his former club, was instrumental in the early onslaught, scoring two power-play goals. This performance helped the Avalanche extend their lead to eight points over Dallas in the race for the NHL's top overall mark.

A Historic First Period Performance

The opening frame set the tone for the rout. Jack Drury initiated the scoring just 2:31 into the game.

Kadri followed quickly with consecutive power-play tallies within a 66-second span. Captain Gabriel Landeskog and Parker Kelly also contributed goals before the first intermission concluded.

The 26 shots recorded in the first period tied for the second-most in franchise history for a single period. Colorado ultimately finished the game with 49 shots, matching their season high.

Depth Scoring and Second Period Action

The scoring continued into the second period, highlighted by Nathan MacKinnon netting his 49th goal of the season. MacKinnon also contributed two assists during the third period.

The final period saw Martin Necas, Sam Malinski, and Artturi Lehkonen each find the back of the net. The total of nine goals scored by the Avalanche tied their season high for goals in one game.

Team Milestones and Injury Update

Colorado showcased remarkable offensive depth, with eight different players scoring goals—the most in a single game since March 17, 1996, according to NHL Stats. Furthermore, nine different players registered multiple points in the contest.

Cale Makar recorded three assists but did not return for the third period due to an upper-body injury. Coach Jared Bednar stated he had no further update on Makar following the game.

The Avalanche converted on 3 of 4 power-play opportunities. Kadri has significantly bolstered the power play since his acquisition from Calgary on March 6, bringing valuable experience from the team's 2022 Stanley Cup title run.

Goaltending and Flames Response

Scott Wedgewood earned the win in net for Colorado, making 27 saves. For the Flames, Brennan Othmann and Ryan Strome managed to score the team's two goals.

Calgary's starting goaltender, Dustin Wolf, was pulled midway through the first period after allowing four goals on 16 shots. Devin Cooley replaced him, stopping 33 shots while allowing five goals.

This result continues a favorable trend for Colorado, who now hold a 12-1-3 record against the Flames in their last 16 meetings. The Flames are scheduled to play next in Vegas on Thursday, while the Avalanche host Vancouver on Wednesday.
