Collin Gosselin Alleges Childhood Abuse by Kate Gosselin in New Memoir Collin Gosselin, former star of Jon and Kate Plus 8, claims in his new memoir that his mother Kate Gosselin abused him, isolated him in a locked basement room and had him institutionalized. Kate has denied the allegations. Collin Gosselin, who rose to fame as a child on the TLC reality shows Jon and Kate Plus 8 and Kate Plus 8, is alleging years of abuse by his mother, Kate Gosselin, in a new memoir titled In The Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood. The book, set for release after years of public allegations, was discussed by Collin in interviews with ABC and Jay Shetty. He told ABC that his mom allegedly made him sleep in a locked room in the basement as a way to isolate him from his father, Jon Gosselin. Collin claimed one of his teachers noticed he had a swollen earlobe, which he said happened after Kate allegedly dragged him across the room by his ear during an abusive incident.Collin Gosselin Reports Abuse To TeachersWhen his swollen earlobe caught a teacher's attention, Collin spoke to the teacher and a guidance counselor, which his mom was not happy about, he told Good Morning America on Monday. My teacher saw and then I talked to my guidance counselor, and I told them about it, Collin said. And my mom was not very happy that I spoke about that.He added that he was eventually pulled from school in the fourth grade and recalled being too afraid to say anything when child protective services questioned abuse allegations. That is when Kate told him his father, Jon Gosselin, no longer wanted to see him, People reported, based on an advance copy. She also moved him out of the finished basement room he had shared with brothers Aaden and Joel and into the unfinished part, where he slept on an air mattress next to the cleaning supplies. When he did not perform for the cameras as she wanted, Kate would yank him around by the earlobe and slap him, he claims.During fourth grade, she pulled him out of school and told the public Collin had special needs, but he told GMA it was really because I threatened my mom's income and image. Collin also alleged to ABC that his mother put his wrists together and his ankles, and took black zip ties and zip-tied his hands and feet together.Institution Placement Allegedly Due To ThreatDays before his 12th birthday, Collin claimed Kate had him removed from their home and placed him in an institution where he was pumped with medication and received little contact from his family. I was told, This is for your own good, he recalled before admitting, I threatened my mom's income, I threatened her image and people will do anything to protect their reputation, especially my mom.In his memoir, Collin calls the facility a hotbed of abuse and claims he was so branded because he pushed back on filming. The facility, Fairmount Behavioral Health System, said in a line included in the memoir that it does not comment on specific residents but does provide individualized treatment based on a patient's particular needs.Kate had said she placed him in an institution that was helping him learn the skills he needs to be the best him he can be, she told People in 2016. Collin wrote that Kate claimed he had autism, bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, but an independent psychological evaluation allegedly showed he did not have any of those diagnoses.Collin admitted he was not sure about life before the cameras arrived at his home to film his family and told the outlet, Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie. Collin grew up on television as cameras followed the Gosselin family for years, first with Jon and Kate Plus 8 and then Kate Plus 8. He claimed his earliest memories were when camera crews took over his house. We were rolling every day, I mean at least a majority of the week, every week of the month of the year, he said. And they were always there. There was always lights set up and cameras. And then once it got big enough and it was, it became, it went from the big family in the small humble house to the big house.Childhood Memories Of Camera Crews Invade HomeIt was never normal, Gosselin noted. That should never be a thing where you exploit children, where you film them potty training. But when I first had that recollection that realization, it was when my parents divorced and I kind of overheard some conversations where my father did not want that for his children. They would do things like they would have photo shoots where they would bring in like puppies and they would be like, Kids, play with the puppies, have fun, pet them. Once they got all the pictures, we would still want to play with the puppies and they would take the puppies away. The divorce came three years into the 10-year run of TLC's Jon and Kate Plus Eight, which was then renamed Kate Plus Eight.Today Collin and his siblings are 22 and 25. The other kids do not speak to their father. People from that time would probably say I was a difficult kid, I won't argue with them, Collin wrote. I probably was.At this point, my rebellion had evolved to become more than just a quiet resistance. I did not always know how to express what I was feeling, so it came out sideways. I started to talk back, throw tantrums, melt down the way kids do. While Kate has remained quiet about the memoir specifically, she defended herself over the summer on social media.Kate Gosselin Responds To Slander AccusationsTikTok posts referenced a few of Collin's claims where he alleged she forced him and his seven siblings apart and pitted them against each other as they were growing up. One fan asked if she was certain the accusations were lies and suggested she take him to court and sue him for defamation. She responded that she cannot because she is a public figure and rules are different.Kate Gosselin also doubled down on her denial of her son Collin's abuse allegations in the comments section of her TikTok videos. Everybody was like, Were you surprised when you got this? I was like, No, Collin said. Because I knew that, it is just that I needed it on paper.Behavioral challenges were occasionally shown as the series went along, but that apparently did not trigger a closer look. Now, as the children of reality stars emerge as adults and speak out, some of the effects of their experiences are becoming public.
