The 2024 London Marathon witnessed history as Sabastian Sawe of Kenya broke the world record, finishing in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds. This is the first official marathon completed under two hours.
Elite Performances
Yomif Kejelcha and Jacob Kiplimo followed Sawe, securing second and third place respectively. In the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia set a new world record with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 41 seconds, improving her previous record by nine seconds.
Hellen Obiri and Joyceline Jepkesgoi completed the top three, all finishing under 2 hours and 16 minutes.
Thousands Participate & Inspiring Stories
Thousands of amateur runners participated in the marathon, with temperatures reaching 20C. Gavin White, a 46-year-old father, ran to raise funds after a brain tumor diagnosis in 2023, demonstrating remarkable resilience.

Fitness coach Joe Wicks ran with someone dressed as Daddy Pig, supporting the National Deaf Children’s Society, despite past criticism. Celebrities Harry Judd and Spencer Matthews also participated, with Matthews highlighting the physical strain on joints.
Future of the Race & Climate Concerns
Organizers are considering moving the London Marathon to an earlier date due to rising temperatures linked to climate change. CEO Hugh Brasher cited increasing heat during the British spring as a key factor.
This potential change follows similar measures taken at the Paris Marathon, which banned single-use plastics. The 48th edition of the London Marathon was a success, showcasing athletic achievement and inspiring personal stories.
