The District of Columbia is undertaking a comprehensive spring cleaning effort to address infrastructure needs and public health concerns following a challenging winter. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a multi-faceted plan focused on revitalizing the city for residents and visitors.
Infrastructure Improvements Underway
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will resurface 81 miles of roads and 40 miles of sidewalks. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will concentrate on cleaning alleyways and removing graffiti throughout the city.
Mayor Bowser emphasized the importance of community participation, encouraging residents to report issues via 311. This collaborative approach aims to maintain the city’s appearance and ensure a welcoming environment.
New Approach to Rat Population Control
The District is implementing a new strategy to combat its rat problem, utilizing fertility suppressants. The Department of Health (DOH), under the leadership of Dr. Ayanna Bennett, will employ baiting, tracking powder, and these suppressants to reduce the rat population.
The program will initially focus on hotspots like Adams Morgan, with follow-up inspections scheduled after three weeks to evaluate its effectiveness. Residents are encouraged to report rat sightings to 311 to help prioritize treatment areas.
Local Incidents Reported
Authorities are investigating several recent incidents within the District. A fatal car accident occurred in Cedar Park, and investigations are ongoing.
In Round Rock, a man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a child sexual assault investigation involving multiple victims. Four Del Valle High School students are facing charges related to the kidnapping and torture of a classmate in eastern Travis County, as investigated by the Sheriff’s Office.
