Taber, Alberta, Wins Kraft Hockeyville 2026
The town of Taber, Alberta, has been named the winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2026. This victory comes with a $250,000 prize dedicated to upgrading the town’s arena facilities, which were severely damaged in a recent incident.
Zamboni Explosion Leads to Community Support
In December, Taber lost both of its ice rinks due to an explosion caused by propane leaking from a Zamboni, ignited by a nearby heater. The total cost to rebuild the two rinks is estimated at approximately $11 million. The community rallied together, and their efforts culminated in winning the Kraft Hockeyville title.
Announcement and Community Celebration
The announcement was made on Saturday night during Sportsnet’s 'Hockey Night in Canada' broadcast by National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman. Residents gathered at the Taber Community Centre Auditorium, erupting in cheers upon hearing the news. Many children, wearing their hockey jerseys, celebrated the win.
More Than Just Funding
Meghan Brennan, a spokesperson for Taber, expressed gratitude for the community’s support. The win represents a beacon of hope and a chance for revitalization after a difficult period. It offers an opportunity for healing and a return to normalcy for the town.
NHL Pre-Season Game Opportunity
In addition to the financial prize, Taber will have the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game in the fall of 2027. This will provide a platform to showcase the town’s resilience and commitment to rebuilding its recreational infrastructure.
Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia Recognized
The runner-up in the competition, Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, will receive $100,000 for community projects. The District of Tumbler Ridge congratulated Taber on their victory.
Tumbler Ridge's Resilience
Tumbler Ridge has faced its own challenges recently, including a mass shooting on February 10th that impacted the local hockey team, the Raptors. Maya Gebala, a Raptors player seriously injured in the attack, has been moved out of intensive care and is focusing on recovery. The Hockeyville competition provided a source of unity and healing for the community.
