As Fiesta San Antonio approaches, scheduled to begin next Thursday, questions persist regarding the possible presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during the annual festival. The Mayor’s office has confirmed no communication has occurred with ICE, leaving organizers and attendees uncertain.
Heightened Immigration Enforcement Concerns
This ambiguity arises as the federal government implements increased immigration enforcement measures across the nation, including in San Antonio. This has fueled speculation for months about the potential impact on Fiesta, which typically draws over 2 million attendees annually.
Lack of Communication from ICE
ICE has not provided definitive answers regarding its intentions, specifically whether agents will be present at Fiesta events or collaborate with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) on security. Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones acknowledged the lack of information hinders predicting ICE’s presence.
Enhanced Security Measures Planned
Despite the uncertainty surrounding ICE, SAPD has announced a robust police presence and more stringent security measures than in previous years. This follows a shooting in Market Square earlier in 2024 that resulted in two fatalities.
Security Protocols for Attendees
Security plans include metal detectors, comprehensive bag inspections, and vehicle barriers. SAPD Public Information Officer Camelia Juarez stated diaper bags will be inspected, and all attendees will be screened with metal detectors, emphasizing that weapons should not be brought to the event.
Other San Antonio News
In other news, two elementary schools in the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District were briefly placed on 'secure status' on Wednesday. A legal dispute over the naming rights of the Poteet Strawberry Festival has moved to federal court.
Investigations Underway
Authorities are also investigating an illegal gambling establishment discovered through surveillance footage, the shooting deaths of nine cows, and a death discovered near Mission Espada Park. Officers responded to the scene near the park on Tuesday afternoon.
