TORONTO – A CBC News broadcast detailed the growing crisis of the skilled trades labour shortage in Canada, with over a million workers needed in the next decade. The report explored various initiatives aimed at addressing the gap, from retraining programs to the integration of technology in construction.
Addressing the Labour Gap
The Construct program, a non-profit organization, is training workers and has successfully placed nearly three-quarters of its 800 graduates in skilled trades jobs. The program focuses on providing opportunities to individuals who may have faced barriers to entry, including those with past legal issues. Take Duval-Smith, a participant who stated he was seeking a positive change in his life and an opportunity to contribute to building affordable housing.
Technology and Automation in Construction
At Laurentian University’s McEwen School of Architecture in Sudbury, Ontario, researchers are exploring the use of robotics to increase efficiency and lower construction costs. Professor Stephen Bates believes the construction industry needs to adopt new technologies and models to meet demand. Students are developing robots, such as “Warthog,” designed to automate tasks like carrying heavy materials. Austin Barrett, a computer science student involved in the project, explained that the robots are built to withstand construction site conditions and could potentially perform the work of two to three people.
Expanding Access to Trades
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program is also playing a role in attracting young people to the trades. Victor Chen, a 17-year-old student in the program, expressed his commitment to a future career in the skilled trades. Katerina Mayetta of the Toronto Catholic District School Board noted a shift in attitudes, with schools increasingly promoting the benefits of trades careers, moving away from a sole focus on university education. There's also been an increase in young women enrolling in co-op programs, seeking careers in fields like carpentry, motivated by job security and resistance to automation.
Challenges and Opportunities for Women
Despite progress, women remain underrepresented in the skilled trades, comprising only 5% of the workforce. Angela Norman, a trainer with years of experience, highlighted the challenges women face, including having to prove their capabilities and overcome biases. However, she also noted improvements in the industry and the positive impact of having female role models.
Artemis II Mission Update
The broadcast also included an update on the Artemis II mission, highlighting the successful lunar flyby and the first ship-to-ship communication between a spacecraft and the International Space Station. U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the crew, singling out Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The mission is now focused on a safe re-entry on Friday evening, with NASA monitoring weather conditions.
