Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge is required to demolish security gates and fencing at his £3 million home following a failed planning appeal.

Planning Appeal Outcome

The structures were considered “unacceptable” on Green Belt land, despite Kerridge’s claims of needing protection from unwanted visitors. The 52-year-old Michelin-starred chef and his wife, sculptor Beth Cullen-Kerridge, installed the gates and fencing to safeguard their privacy and the safety of their 11-year-old son.

Initial Dispute and Council Ruling

The local council determined that the structures needed planning permission and did not align with the character of the affluent neighborhood. The dispute began in 2020 when the couple made changes to their property’s entrance without prior approval. A retrospective planning application was later withdrawn after neighbor complaints.

Neighbor Concerns

Neighbor Kathryn Durrant objected to the development, citing the structures’ excessive size, poor construction, and disruption to the area’s aesthetic. She also stated the carport and gates hindered navigation on the narrow lane, forcing vehicles into her driveway. Local councillor Mandy Brar shared these concerns, arguing the development negatively impacted riverside views and the area’s character.

Enforcement Action and Appeal

Windsor and Maidenhead council officials took enforcement action in 2023, describing the fencing and gates as “alien” and “unsympathetic” to the Green Belt. They also criticized the carport’s size. During the appeal, Kerridge and his wife argued the security measures were vital due to past trespassing and intimidation.

Inspector's Decision

Planning Inspector Robin Buchanan acknowledged the couple’s concerns about public attention but ruled that the development’s impact on the Green Belt and the area’s character outweighed their security needs. Buchanan stated that while the couple faced “unwelcome public attention,” the harm caused by the structures justified the decision.

Demolition Deadline

Kerridge now has two months to dismantle the gates, fencing, and carport, representing a setback in his efforts to secure his family’s privacy.
