Formula One officials have rescheduled the Miami Grand Prix to begin at 1 PM local time (6 PM GMT), three hours earlier than originally planned. This change is a proactive measure to avoid potential disruptions caused by an approaching thunderstorm.
Ensuring Safety and Optimal Racing
The decision was made jointly by the FIA, Formula One, and Miami Grand Prix organizers. They stated the adjustment aims to minimize disruptions and prioritize the safety of drivers, spectators, teams, and staff. Consultations between the governing body and Formula One Management followed Saturday’s qualifying session.
Florida’s Storm Regulations
Florida state regulations require the postponement or cancellation of major events if lightning is detected. Forecasts predicting storms from 3 PM prompted race officials to act quickly and reschedule the event. Teams have been notified and have agreed to the change.
Strategic Importance of the Miami Race
A cancellation would have presented significant challenges for the sport. The Miami Grand Prix is a key market in the United States, a region of high importance to Formula One’s owners, Liberty Media. Over 200,000 fans are anticipated throughout the race weekend.
Qualifying Results and New Regulations
Kimi Antonelli, the 19-year-old Mercedes driver, secured pole position, followed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull. This season’s new regulations, which have created differences in car speeds due to battery power management, also influenced the decision to reschedule. Organizers aim to avoid a repeat of the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix, where only two laps were completed behind the safety car due to heavy rain.
By moving the race to an earlier time, officials have increased the available daylight hours to complete the event, even if the storm’s timing shifts.
