A career criminal has expressed regret over a £5.5 million compensation payout following a two-year period of drug-fueled excess.
Prison Attack and Compensation
Steven Wilson, a serial burglar with over 30 convictions, successfully sued the Ministry of Justice after being stabbed with a nine-inch knife at HMP Chelmsford in 2018. The attack left him with severe injuries, including a torn liver, fractured spine, and lacerated spinal cord.
Lavish Spending and Lost Fortune
Despite the life-changing sum, Wilson has reportedly squandered nearly half of the £5.5 million on a lavish lifestyle. This included cocaine binges, expensive hotel stays, and extravagant gifts for friends and family, while neglecting his estranged daughter.
Brother's Concerns
Wilson’s brother, David, has voiced deep concern for his sibling’s well-being. He warns that reckless spending and associating with former criminal acquaintances could lead to a tragic outcome, drawing parallels to Mickey ‘Lotto Lout’ Carroll, who lost a £9.7 million lottery jackpot within eight years.
Attracting Opportunists
David revealed that Steven’s sudden wealth attracted individuals from his past who had previously abandoned him during his prison sentence. These individuals resurfaced once the money became available.
Escalating Problems
Despite being largely wheelchair-bound due to his injuries, Wilson spent money on luxury cars, gold jewelry, and gifts for family members, including a BMW and a PlayStation 5 for his brother and father. However, David fears this attention has worsened Steven’s addiction and mental health struggles.
Relocation and Legal Issues
Wilson has been harassed, robbed, and swindled, leading him to relocate to a £340,000 bungalow on the east coast for safety. He has also faced legal issues, including a driving ban for erratic behavior.
A Cycle of Self-Destruction
The compensation, intended to provide Wilson with a fresh start, has instead contributed to a cycle of self-destruction. David’s plea for intervention is a desperate attempt to prevent Steven from suffering a similar fate to Carroll.
