The actor’s manager, John Alcantar, confirmed that Tolkan passed away on Thursday. A brief statement published on the official “Back to the Future” website noted that his death occurred “peacefully,” though no details regarding the cause of death were shared.
Tolkan left an indelible mark on cinematic history with his portrayal of Gerald Strickland, the bow-tied and disciplined vice principal in “Back to the Future.” His line to Marty McFly—“You have a serious attitude problem, McFly. You’re lazy”—remains one of the film’s most memorable moments. The character of Marty McFly was brought to life by Michael J. Fox.
Tolkan also portrayed the character Tom “Stinger” Jardian in the film *Top Gun*, where he drew attention with his role as a stern and authoritarian commander. His scenes with the character Maverick, played by Tom Cruise, left a lasting impression on audiences.
Born in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan served in the Navy during the Korean War. He later settled in New York and remained active on the theater stage for approximately 25 years. He was also part of the original cast of the famous play *Glengarry Glen Ross*.
