Inspiration from the Water
The Genesis of 'Get Wet!'
Artist Ruth Lauer, a passionate swimmer, found inspiration for 'Get Wet!' during a tranquil moment at a public pool. Observing the colors and shapes through water-blurred glasses, she was inspired to capture the scene on canvas.
This initial painting led Lauer to explore the theme further, resulting in a dedicated series of works inspired by Austin's cherished swimming pools. The exhibition is a direct result of her deep appreciation for these aquatic spaces.
Community and Connection
Lauer explained her fascination with pools: "After the initial couple of paintings I just started thinking about what is it about pools that makes us so relaxed, so friendly. We get along, there's all different people there and I started thinking more about that and how swimming pool can bring community together."
She emphasizes the communal aspect, noting how pools foster unity and shared experiences. "I think that our community swimming pools in Austin are a great asset and they're somewhat underutilized," Lauer stated. "We really need more fun nowadays and I think swimming pools are just a great way to have fun and I tried to incorporate that into this exhibit."
A Message of Joy and Equality
Lauer views 'Get Wet!' as more than just paintings; it's an invitation to find joy and connection in the real world, especially during challenging times. She aims for her art to offer a respite from the intensity of modern life and constant digital engagement.
"I think that everything's so serious and intense and we're doing all this doom scrolling," Lauer said. "There's just nothing better than being in water, having gravity release its grip on us, and just being friendly with other people. And I hope that my art captures some of those moments."
She also noted a common sentiment from pool-goers: "There's something about being in your most basic clothing, with no status symbols around that make us all equal."
