The Netflix series XO, Kitty is gearing up for its third season, taking viewers directly into the explosive senior year for Kitty Song-Covey and her friends. This new chapter focuses on the characters as they contemplate their futures beyond the glamorous Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS).
A First Look at the Season Three Soundtrack
Ahead of the premiere, an exclusive look at the accompanying soundtrack reveals a soundscape rich with K-pop hits. Co-music supervisor Lindsay Wolfington highlighted the show's musical balance.
Balancing Fun, Drama, and Emotion
Wolfington noted that the series maintains a healthy mix of elements crucial to the teenage experience. "Whether that’s falling in love, heartbreak, friendship, dance parties — all those things you love to do when you’re young," she stated.
XO, Kitty is a spin-off from the popular To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise, centering on Lara Jean Song-Covey’s younger sister. The series follows Kitty as she moves from the U.S. to attend KISS in Seoul.
Kitty’s Evolving Journey
Previous seasons documented Kitty’s transformation from an American student feeling out of place to an integrated KISS attendee with new friendships and crucial information about her late mother. While she has found her footing, challenges remain.
Tapping into Shared Narrative History
The music supervisors leverage their experience from the original film trilogy to capture the story's core. Wolfington explained that while Kitty has a distinct path from her sister Lara Jean, parallels exist because both are teenage girls.
"Since we worked on all three movies, there’s just a Rolodex in the back of our head of songs that match certain moments," Wolfington shared. She added that the tone is shifting, noting, "I feel like the mischief is giving way to more reflectiveness, and getting to that in the music feels like a transition we’re making this season."
Senior Year Decisions and Romance
As friends Yuri, Quincy, Juliana, Dae, and Madison grapple with post-high school plans, Kitty must finally confront the unresolved romantic tension with heartthrob Min-ho Moon.
Music supervisor Webb commented on the season’s thematic depth regarding these choices. "The season does a really good job of touching on that where everyone’s questioning and making life choices, which is very healthy," Webb said.
Webb also touched upon the gravity of these decisions, suggesting that while the characters share a strong bond, they might soon part ways permanently. This reality adds weight to their current choices.
Lara Jean’s Return and Legacy
The third season will feature a confirmed cameo from Lana Condor, reprising her role as Lara Jean Song-Covey. The latest trailer shows Lara Jean appearing when Kitty urgently needs advice and comfort food.
Wolfington drew a parallel between the timelines, noting that Lara Jean was in her senior year during the third film. "Looking back on our work on season three, we can’t believe Kitty’s at that stage,” Wolfington remarked. “History is repeating itself in a cool way.”
Webb concluded by expressing enthusiasm for continuing the universe: "We love looking for the songs for Kitty and the gang, and we love being a part of this continuation. We want this universe to go on forever."
