Lincoln Financial Field will look dramatically different when it hosts six matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Beginning in June, the Philadelphia stadium – commonly known as “The Linc” – will shed its usual corporate branding, transforming into a “clean zone” as required by FIFA regulations.
FIFA's 'Clean Zone' Policy
All visible sponsorships, including the Lincoln Financial Field sign, Eagles logos, and other branding, will be covered or removed for the duration of the month-long event. This policy extends to all 16 US stadiums hosting World Cup matches, with only Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta receiving an exemption.
Brand Exclusivity for Sponsors
The changes are designed to provide exclusivity for FIFA’s official partners, such as Adidas, Visa, Hyundai, and McDonalds. A FIFA spokesperson described the policy as a “brand protection policy,” emphasizing collaboration with host teams to address “unique infrastructure and operational considerations.”
Extensive Rebranding Efforts
The rebranding will be extensive. Everything from the four Lincoln Financial Field logos on the stadium’s exterior to Eagles posters showcasing team history will be affected. Even a large Lincoln Financial Field sign added in 2019 will need to be covered, with ongoing discussions about the best method.
Beyond the Stadium Name
The impact extends beyond the stadium’s name. The Miller Lite sign will be covered due to Anheuser-Busch’s sponsorship with FIFA, and Pepsi Plaza will be rebranded to reflect Coca-Cola’s long-standing partnership with the organization. Xfinity logos and the Miller Lite Fieldhouse may also be removed.
Eagles Branding Also Affected
Eagles branding throughout the stadium, including player posters and Lombardi Trophy displays, will also be temporarily removed. Meg Kane, host city executive and CEO of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, noted the process is “incredibly nuanced and far more complex than I anticipated.”
Digital Signage Offers Some Relief
Fortunately, a 2019 stadium upgrade incorporated digital signage, simplifying the process of switching sponsors. “Those digital upgrades… have made for easier conversations and are easier for us to address,” Kane stated. The changes will begin in mid-May when FIFA’s 30-day exclusive period begins.
Cost of the Transformation
Philadelphia Soccer 2026, the host committee, will bear the cost of covering sponsorships and removing signs. The Linc has experience with similar branding adjustments, having removed Pepsi branding during Army-Navy games due to Coca-Cola’s ties.
