The leadership of West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park is expected to outline a plan to reopen the hospital on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Financial Challenges and Suspension of Operations
West Suburban Medical Center is working to stabilize its finances following what the hospital describes as a billing problem. Operations were suspended on Friday after Resilience Health, the hospital’s owner, announced the need to address the issue.
Resilience Health Addresses Billing Issues
Resilience Health CEO Dr. Manoj Prasad stated he is working diligently to resolve the billing system problem and resume operations as quickly as possible. He highlighted the financial strain caused by low reimbursement rates for Medicaid patients. “At any given time, we have 67 percent of my patients are Medicaid. I am not getting paid for most of them,” Dr. Prasad said.
Community and Political Response
State Representative La Shawn Ford, D-Chicago, emphasized the importance of restoring services to the community. His district includes the hospital, and he is actively involved in finding a solution.
“I am in constant communication with the president and CEO and the state of Illinois about the condition of the hospital,” Representative Ford said. “I have been working to try and make to sure that the community did not lose the coverage of this hospital because it is a total reverse of what we have been trying to do and the community.”
Pastoral Support and Community Engagement
Local pastors have emphasized the hospital’s role as a safety net for low-income patients, deeming it essential to the community. They are planning a community meeting next week to address concerns and provide updates.
Connection to Weiss Memorial Hospital
The furloughs at West Suburban come approximately seven months after Weiss Memorial, also owned by Resilience Health, ceased in-patient and emergency care. This followed its removal from the Medicare program due to concerns about conditions within the hospital.
Reporting Requirements and Future Operations
According to the Illinois Health Facilities and Service Review Board, the suspension of services requires Resilience Health to file a report every 30 days. If the suspension isn't lifted within a year, the owner must either file for an extension or permanently discontinue operations. Dr. Prasad affirmed his commitment to serving the community, stating, “I am not someone who is trying to kick the can down the road. I am here to serve and I am here to stay.”
