Controversial Call During Brewers-Rays Match
MLB umpire CB Bucknor faced criticism and amusement on Tuesday night after making a highly unusual call during the game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays. The incident occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Brewers batter Jake Bauers facing Rays pitcher Cole Sulser.
The Play and the Ruling
Bauers hit a line drive to Rays second baseman Ben Williamson, who deflected the ball. Williamson’s subsequent throw to first base was off-target. Despite a seemingly routine play, Bucknor ruled that Bauers did not touch first base and was out when tagged.
Replay footage clearly showed Bauers making contact with the first base bag, with Bucknor positioned nearby. The call was immediately overturned upon review.
Reactions to the Umpire's Decision
The unusual call elicited visible reactions from those involved. Brewers batter Jake Bauers and manager Pat Murphy were seen smiling after the call was reversed. Even Rays manager Kevin Cash appeared to smirk at the situation.
Former New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain expressed his disbelief on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “This is so bad you just have to laugh!! Something has to be done.”
Game Outcome
Milwaukee ultimately won the game 6-2. Jake Bauers finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, including a home run in the eighth inning off Yoendrys Gomez to extend the Brewers’ lead.
Gary Sanchez also contributed a home run for Milwaukee. With the win, the Brewers improved their record to 4-1, while the Rays fell to 2-3.
