UCLA coach Bob Chesney gave burn the boats speech before Oregon win UCLA coach Bob Chesney delivered a burn the boats speech inspired by Hernan Cortes before the Bruins beat Oregon 17-15 at Autzen Stadium. UCLA lost quarterback Nico Iamaleava to a knee injury in the game. UCLA head coach Bob Chesney delivered a fiery burn the boats speech in the Autzen Stadium tunnel before his Bruins beat Oregon 17-15 on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026. The 49-year-old coach had his undefeated team take a knee for one final message before facing the Ducks in Eugene. He channeled Tony D'Amato, the Al Pacino character from the 1999 film Any Given Sunday. In the movie, D'Amato told his players, We're in hell right now, gentlemen. Believe me.And, we can stay here, get the s--t kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one inch at a time. Chesney gave his players a speech in a similar vein. He chose to paraphrase Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes after his 1519 landing in Mexico with 600 troops. The coach used the story to make sure his team had no other thought than winning. Chesney told the Bruins that Cortes wanted nobody to have another thought. No other thought than we're 100% positive we're winning this f--king battle. He looks around at the boats they'd have to go home on and says, Burn the f--king boats. There is no way out. We can't go that way. You gotta go through these motherf--kers. The Bruins stood up, chanted something, and Chesney turned toward the tunnel.Chesney Delivers Cinematic Burn The Boats SpeechLike Tom Cruise about to strap in and shoot down multiple Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighters, Chesney grabbed his sunglasses, locked them into place, seemed to hit play on an Apple iWatch workout and walked down the ramp into battle. Chesney is not the first inspirational speaker to use the burn the boats speech, but in the modern Internet era he is the first to do it with such cinematic flair. The hair is perfect. The all-black shoes, pants and shirt and then the black sunglasses project something that none of us can remember from UCLA: hardness. After his burn the boats speech, the Bruins dominated time of possession 39:15 to 20:45 and beat Oregon 17-15. The win snapped a 22-year road losing streak against Oregon. It was not a beautiful win at all.Coach Demands Improvement After Narrow Oregon VictoryChesney was the first to admit it before his team boarded a plane back to Los Angeles, instead of a boat. Remember, they burned the boats. Chesney told the media that if anyone asks about complacency, they do not have to. There is enough on that film that the Bruins have to do a whole lot better if they want to win the next game and any to follow. He said the team cannot turn the ball over or get a field goal blocked. Chesney also said the Bruins cannot do a lot of the things they did, letting the ball get down at the one-yard line, and all the other things that showed up in that game. There were moments where it really could have gone the other way, but he was really, really proud of the effort. He was really, really proud of how hard they played. He added that he was really, really proud of them being able to self-regulate in a hostile environment like that. Not an easy place to play, but he thought they did a really good job of it, and he is proud of that effort. There is bad news for the Bruins. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava is believed to be out for the season with a knee injury suffered Saturday.Injury To Quarterback Nico Iamaleava Threatens Playoff HopesHe was examined by Chesney and medical staff during the first half. In a troubling development, Bear Alexander was seen punching toward Iamaleava. That is a troubling response to an incident involving an injured quarterback, regardless of the outcome. The Bruins are not flawless, and losing Iamaleava could threaten their College Football Playoff ambitions. But Chesney has already accomplished something remarkable: He has made UCLA football look tough, fearless and relevant again. The boats are burning. Now comes the harder part of keeping this dream season afloat. Where does Chesney go with the speeches from here? Will he channel Band of Brothers? Stay tuned. We are about to witness some of this guy's best work with a dream season in the works.
