Uber Expands Electric Vehicle Incentive Program
Uber is extending its program offering financial incentives to drivers who transition to electric vehicles (EVs) across the United States. The initiative aims to encourage wider EV adoption among its driver network.
$4,000 Grants for Eligible Drivers
The core of the program is a $4,000 grant available to Uber drivers who switch from gasoline-powered vehicles to EVs. This grant applies to both new and used electric vehicles, making the transition more accessible to a broader range of drivers.
Eligibility Requirements and Application Process
To qualify for the grant, drivers must hold Platinum or Diamond status and complete 100 eligible rides by December 31. Applications for the grant are being processed starting April 16 through the Uber platform’s website.
Additional Discounts and Partnerships
Beyond the $4,000 grant, Uber is offering additional savings. Drivers purchasing a new or used EV through the TrueCar platform can receive an extra $1,000 discount.
Kia Collaboration Offers Further Savings
Uber has partnered with Kia to provide drivers with additional discounts on select EV models. These include $1,000 off the Kia Niro or EV6, and $1,500 off the EV9 SUV. A Kia EV9, starting at $55,000, can be purchased for $49,500 with the combined Uber grant and Kia discount.
Program Context and EV Adoption Rates
The program builds upon previous incentives, including a federal tax credit offering $4,000 for used EV purchases, which Uber’s grant matches. Uber currently has approximately 286,000 EVs on its platform globally.
The company reports that Uber drivers are adopting EVs at a faster rate compared to the average car owner in the US, Canada, and Europe. This suggests the program is effectively incentivizing a shift towards more sustainable transportation options.
