Tiger Woods Crash: Bodycam Video Released
Body camera footage was released on Thursday, nearly a week after professional golfer Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover crash in Florida and subsequently charged with driving under the influence. The incident occurred on Friday when Woods’ Land Rover collided with a trailer while a truck was entering a driveway on Jupiter Island.
Details of the Crash and Initial Response
The crash resulted in approximately $5,000 in damage to the truck’s rear-left fender and the trailer’s wheel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Footage shows Woods kneeling beside the road, speaking with a Martin County sheriff’s deputy shortly after the incident.
Woods' Account to Law Enforcement
According to the bodycam video, Woods stated, “I looked down at my phone and all of a sudden, boom.” He was informed by the deputy that a medic would evaluate him. The incident report indicates Woods stated he did not notice the truck slowing down.
Signs of Impairment and DUI Investigation
The responding deputy noted “several signs of impairment” and requested a DUI investigation. The report details that Woods exhibited bloodshot and glassy eyes, extremely dilated pupils, and appeared lethargic and slow in his movements.
Field Sobriety Tests and Medical Explanations
According to the report, Woods struggled to complete field sobriety tests, limping and stumbling during one exercise. He explained to the deputy that he has undergone multiple surgeries on his back and leg, and his ankle sometimes seizes up when walking.
Medication and Refusal of Tests
Woods denied consuming alcohol before the crash but admitted to taking “a few” prescription medication pills that morning. Authorities discovered hydrocodone pills in his pocket; hydrocodone is a pain medication. At the jail, Woods completed a breath test but refused to submit to a urine test.
Legal Proceedings and Woods' Statement
On Tuesday, Woods waived an arraignment and entered a not-guilty plea to charges of driving under the influence and refusing a lawful urine test. His attorney filed the notice of plea with the court.
Seeking Treatment
In a statement posted on social media, Woods announced he would be seeking treatment outside of the U.S. He stated, “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally.”
