Emergency Evacuation at Kathmandu Airport
A Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul was evacuated on Monday after a fire broke out in its landing gear upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The aircraft, carrying 277 passengers and 11 crew members, experienced a technical issue during its final approach, resulting in a visible fire and thick smoke from the right landing gear.
Following strict safety protocols, the crew initiated an emergency evacuation, directing passengers to exit via emergency slides. Despite the urgency, the swift response ensured all passengers and crew were safely evacuated without any injuries.
Runway Closure and Investigation
The incident led to a temporary closure of the airport's single runway for nearly two hours, causing delays and diversions for several inbound international flights. Yahya Ustun, Turkish Airlines' senior vice president of communications, stated on X that technical inspections had begun, with initial assessments pointing to a hydraulic pipe malfunction as the likely cause of the fire.
Gyanendra Bhul, a spokesperson for Nepal's civil aviation authority, confirmed that while the rescue phase was successful, a comprehensive investigation into the root cause is underway.
Challenges of Aviation in the Himalayas
The incident highlights the unique challenges of operating flights in the Himalayan region, known for its demanding and remote runways surrounded by towering peaks and volatile weather. Nepal's aviation sector has faced scrutiny due to safety concerns, including a series of crashes and a European Union blacklist of Nepalese airlines.
In response, the Nepalese government has announced plans to modernize its aviation infrastructure, including advanced radar systems and improved weather monitoring technology.
History of Incidents at Tribhuvan International Airport
This is not the first time a Turkish Airlines flight has encountered difficulties in Kathmandu. In 2015, another aircraft from the same airline skidded off the runway, causing a four-day closure and numerous flight cancellations. The recurrence of such incidents underscores the complexities of landing at Tribhuvan International Airport and the need for rigorous maintenance and safety checks.
As investigators analyze the landing gear and review flight data, the aviation community seeks answers to prevent future occurrences. The airport has since resumed normal operations, but the event serves as a reminder of the volatility of air travel in one of the world's most geographically challenging environments.
