Trump's Approval Rating Declines

President Donald Trump has reached a new low in approval ratings during his second term in office, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS and released on Wednesday. The survey indicates a concerning trend for the administration as it faces ongoing challenges.

Key Poll Findings

The poll, taken between March 26 and March 30 among 1,201 respondents, shows 35% approval and 64% disapproval. This represents a slight decrease from a February 17-20 poll, which recorded 36% approval and 63% disapproval. The margin of error for both polls is 3.2 percent.

Historical Comparison

Trump’s approval rating previously dipped below 35% at the end of his first term, following the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. A poll from January 9-14, 2021, showed an approval rating of 34%.

Additional Polling Data

A separate poll released on Tuesday by YouGov showed a similar trend. Allen Houston of YouGov stated, “Only 35% of Americans strongly or somewhat approve of how Trump is handling his job as president, while 58% disapprove, for a net job approval of -23.” This is the lowest net approval rating Trump has received in any Economist / YouGov Poll throughout his presidency.

Independent Voter Concerns

YouGov data highlights a significant drop in approval among independent voters, currently at -45 points. This is the worst rating for any president at this point in their second term, even surpassing levels seen during the Watergate scandal with President Nixon.

White House Response

In response to the poll results, an administration spokesperson stated, “The ultimate poll was November 5th 2024 when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda.” They further emphasized the President’s accomplishments, including job creation, inflation control, and housing affordability.

The spokesperson added, “No other President in history has accomplished more for the American people than President Trump, who is working tirelessly…This is just the beginning as his agenda continues taking effect.”
