Trump Calls for ICE and CBP Funding Bill

Former President Donald Trump is urging Congress to pass a reconciliation bill by June 1st to provide funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This request comes as Congress is currently in recess and amid a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.

Bipartisan Obstacles and Proposed Solution

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have indicated their willingness to comply with the former president’s request. Their aim is to bypass potential Democratic opposition and circumvent the Senate filibuster, ensuring the bill's passage.

Trump's Justification and Concerns

Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday to articulate his reasoning for the urgent deadline. He criticized Democrats, stating, “Unlike Republicans, Democrats want to DEFUND the Police, Border Patrol, and all Immigration Enforcement.” He further argued that Democrats seek to allow “Criminals, the Mentally Insane, and Lunatics from all over the World” to enter the country unchecked, posing a danger to Americans.

Focus on National Security

Trump framed the funding bill as a matter of national security and a crucial step to support law enforcement. He emphasized the need to replenish funding for ICE agents and Border Patrol, asserting that Democrats would be unable to prevent its passage. He stated, “We will not allow them to hurt the families of these Great Patriots by defunding them.”

Deadline and Funding Source

The former president has requested that the bill be delivered to his desk no later than June 1st. He indicated that funding from what he termed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” would be utilized to continue paying ICE and CBP agents in the interim. “Immigration Enforcement will continue, and our Border will remain secure, with no Murderers, Drug Dealers, or Criminals of any kind entering our Country,” he wrote.

Criticism of Previous Administration

Trump also called on Americans to consider the increase in illegal immigration during the previous administration under President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress. He accused Democrats of being “The Democrats are the Party of Open Borders for Criminals, Crime, Zero Immigration Enforcement, Defunding the Police, and Allowing the Worst of the Worst to have ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ Cards.”
