Trump Considers US Withdrawal from NATO
President Donald Trump has indicated he is considering withdrawing the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) following disagreements with allies over potential military action against Iran. The President sharply criticized the alliance, questioning its commitment to collective defense in a recent interview.
Interview with The Telegraph
In an interview with The Telegraph, published on Wednesday, Trump dismissed NATO and stated the issue of US membership is “beyond reconsideration.” He expressed frustration with what he perceives as a lack of reciprocal support from NATO allies.
Lack of Reciprocity Claimed
Trump contrasted US support for allies, including Ukraine, with what he described as a failure of allies to provide similar support to the United States. He stated, “We’ve always been there automatically… They weren’t there for us.”
Strait of Hormuz Dispute
The remarks follow hesitation from NATO members to support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This critical oil route, which carries approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, has been effectively closed for weeks, causing disruption to energy markets and raising fears of a global recession.
Criticism of Key Allies
Trump also directed criticism towards key allies, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He questioned the strength of the UK’s military and its overall defense posture.
Administration Echoes Frustration
Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the administration’s concerns, describing NATO as a “one-way street.” He warned that Washington may re-evaluate its role within the alliance following the current conflict. Rubio suggested a potential reassessment of US involvement after the situation with Iran is resolved.
