Trump Forecasts Rapid Conclusion to Iran Conflict
President Trump recently indicated that the ongoing military engagement involving Iran will not persist for an extended duration. In a phone interview, he asserted, "We’re not going to be there too much longer. We’re obliterating the s–t out of them right now, it’s a total obliteration."
He specified that the immediate goal remains neutralizing Iran's offensive capabilities. "But we won’t have to be there much longer — but we have more work to do in terms of killing their offensive, whatever offensive capability they have left," Trump stated.
Strait of Hormuz Reopening After U.S. Withdrawal
Regarding the critical maritime passage, Trump suggested the Strait of Hormuz would resolve itself upon the departure of U.S. forces. He remarked, "Well, I think it’ll automatically open."
Trump delegated the responsibility for reopening the strait to other nations. "Let the countries that are using the strait, let them go and open it… because I would imagine whoever’s controlling the oil will be very happy to open the strait," he added.
U.S. Strikes and Evidence of Payload Size
On Monday, President Trump shared video evidence on Truth Social depicting a significant explosion in Iran, allegedly resulting from a U.S. airstrike on an ammunition depot in Isfahan. A U.S. official informed the Wall Street Journal that "high volume" 2,000-pound bunker buster bombs were utilized in the action.
Trump expressed surprise at the scale of the detonation, noting it indicated a substantial on-the-ground payload near the major city where Iran operates a nuclear facility. "That was a beauty. That was some explosion," Trump marveled, confirming the U.S. forces destroyed "stuff."
Achieving Key Objectives
The President claimed success in two primary areas of the operation. "Well, we’re taking away their nuclear capability, and we’ve achieved regime change," he asserted.
He further suggested that current Iranian leadership is more amenable to discussion. "You know, we’re dealing right now with a totally different group of people, and they’re much more reasonable than previous, much more reasonable."
Contradictory Signals on Strategy
When questioned about reports suggesting a willingness to conclude the conflict without securing the reopening of the strait, Trump downplayed immediate focus on that issue. "I don’t think about it, to be honest. My sole function was to make sure that they don’t have a nuclear weapon," he clarified.
However, Trump also maintained secrecy regarding his broader operational plans. "I can’t talk to you about this stuff, all of it. Okay? I just can’t talk to you. It’s so ridiculous, right? What do you want me to give, my strategy?"
Contingency Planning Remains in Place
Despite predicting a swift resolution, the administration has prepared for prolonged engagement. This preparation includes deploying thousands of U.S. troops to the region, involving two Marine Corps amphibious ready groups and Army parachute specialists for potential ground assaults.
