Trump Praises Economy During Iran Address
Former President Donald Trump emphasized the strength of the U.S. economy during a prime-time speech on Wednesday concerning the conflict with Iran. This address occurred as Americans are experiencing a notable increase in gasoline prices, with the national average surpassing $4 per gallon – the largest jump since 2022.
Economic Claims Made in Speech
During his address, President Trump stated, “We built the strongest economy in history. We’re going through it right now, the strongest in history, in one year, we’ve taken a dead and crippled country…and made it the hottest country anywhere in the world by far with no inflation.” He further claimed record-setting investments exceeding $18 trillion and the highest stock market ever, with 53 all-time record highs in a single year.
He connected this economic strength to his administration’s foreign policy goals, stating, “It all positioned us to get rid of a cancer that has long simmered. It’s known as the nuclear Iran.”
Approval Ratings Show Decline
Despite his economic claims, recent polls reveal a decline in Trump’s approval ratings. A CNN survey conducted by SSRS, released on Wednesday, showed his approval rating at 35 percent, with a disapproval rating of 64 percent. The survey polled 1,201 respondents from March 26 to March 30, with a margin of error of 3.2 percent.
Republican Support Waning
The CNN poll indicated a drop in strong Republican approval of Trump’s job performance, falling from 52 percent in January to 43 percent. A YouGov poll released on Tuesday showed Trump’s approval among Republicans at 81 percent, with 14 percent disapproval. This is the lowest level of Republican approval since January 16-19, when it was 79 percent.
The YouGov poll, conducted from March 27 to March 30 among 1,679 U.S. adults (margin of error 3.2 percent), showed 68 percent of Republicans approving of Trump’s performance versus 22 percent disapproving. Last week, those numbers were 76 percent approval and 14 percent disapproval.
Reactions to Trump's Speech
Reactions to the speech were varied. One individual expressed disappointment, stating, “All I heard from his speech tonight was WAR WAR WAR. Nothing to lower the cost of living for Americans…Nothing for America’s future.”
Another commentator praised the speech, highlighting Trump’s objectives in Iran: “Destroy their weapons factories, destroy their navy, destroy their air force, destroy their chances of ever having a nuclear weapon.” They emphasized that his leadership sends a message of strength and a commitment to defending U.S. interests.
