Trump Criticizes Macron and NATO
Former President Trump publicly criticized French President Emmanuel Macron and other NATO allies, alleging insufficient support during potential U.S. military actions in Iran. He praised the strength and success of the American military while highlighting what he perceived as a lack of reciprocal assistance from European partners.
Remarks at White House Lunch
During a private lunch at the White House on Wednesday, Trump mocked Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, referencing a recent viral video of Brigitte Macron slapping her husband. “I call up France, Macron – whose wife treats him extremely badly,” Trump reportedly joked while recounting a hypothetical conversation about assistance in the Gulf.
“Still Recovering from the Right to the Jaw”
Trump added, “Still recovering from the right to the jaw,” referencing the incident. He then imitated a French accent, claiming Macron responded, “‘No no no, we cannot do that, Donald. We can do that after the war is won.’”
Considering Withdrawal from NATO
The former president’s comments followed his assertion that he was “absolutely” considering withdrawing the U.S. from the NATO military alliance. This consideration stemmed from European leaders’ refusal to allow the U.S. to use military bases during a month-long conflict involving Iran and their reluctance to provide naval support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Macron’s Response
When asked about Trump’s remarks, President Macron responded that they were “neither elegant nor up to standard.” He emphasized the need for respect in international relations.
