All 32 NFL teams are currently assessing these prospects to find the perfect fit for their defensive schemes. Based on recent evaluations, we have updated our top 10 defensive backs heading toward the draft.
The Elite Tier: Top Prospects Revealed
Caleb Downs, a versatile safety from Ohio State, stands out as the premier prospect in the 2026 class. Downs plays with exceptional downhill physicality and intentional violence.
His high-level game reading ability allows him to consistently make plays on the ball carrier. Downs is projected to provide an immediate impact upon joining an NFL defense.
Cornerback Standouts and Recovery Stories
Mansoor Delane emerged as the top cornerback in college football during the 2025 season. Delane, who transferred from Virginia Tech to LSU, showed significant improvement.
His coverage instincts are clear on tape, resulting in two interceptions and a career-high 11 pass breakups. He is expected to excel as a boundary cornerback in both man and zone schemes.
Jermod McCoy, a cornerback from Tennessee, missed the 2025 season due to a torn ACL sustained in January. By the time the 2026 Draft arrives, he will be well over a year removed from the injury.
McCoy was elite during the 2024 campaign, showcasing high-level coverage traits. His skill set is well-balanced, combining athleticism with top-tier technique.
Athleticism and Versatility in the Secondary
Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood possesses truly off-the-charts athleticism, though his coverage instincts are still developing. He plays every rep with confidence and physicality.
Hood’s tape demonstrates terrific lateral explosion, allowing him to remain in-phase while effectively playing physical man coverage.
Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman is positioned to be a major riser following the NFL Combine. His size, length, and athleticism make him versatile enough to handle multiple roles, excelling against the run and in coverage.
Scouts may see his name appearing in first-round mock drafts after the Indianapolis workouts.
Nickel Specialists and Physical Tacklers
D'Angelo Ponds profiles as a nickel-only prospect at 5-9 and 173 pounds, but he projects as a competitive playmaker at the next level. Ponds is highly versatile with elite instincts in coverage.
The Miami native concluded his college career as a National Championship winner, accumulating 31 career pass breakups and seven interceptions.
Brandon Cisse of South Carolina is athletic and physical, particularly when utilized in press-man coverage. He actively uses his hands to disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage.
Cisse will need to improve his instincts and patience, as the technical aspects of his game remain somewhat inconsistent.
Closing Out the Top 10
Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is described as a “heat-seeking missile.” He closes down plays quickly with outstanding speed and delivers legitimate pop as a tackler.
McNeil-Warren sets a physical tone near the line of scrimmage and could potentially fill a role similar to Nick Emmanwori in the NFL.
Chris Johnson, a cornerback from San Diego State, is a technically proficient defender. He moves easily, displaying savvy athleticism while staying in-phase with his assignment.
Johnson made quarterbacks regret testing him, finishing the season with four interceptions and eight pass breakups.
