High Cost of Attendance for Arizona's Final Four Run
University of Arizona fans preparing to travel to Indianapolis for the Final Four are facing substantial expenses for both game tickets and airfare. The excitement surrounding the team's appearance is tempered by the high price points associated with attending the national semi-final event.
Ticket Availability and Pricing Breakdown
For Saturday's game, the lowest-priced tickets listed on the official NCAA Ticketmaster site are approximately $454. Championship game resale tickets, before any added fees, start slightly lower at $229, depending on the seating location.
The university's athletic department secured an allotment of roughly 3,000 tickets for the event. These tickets are distributed among coaches, staff, players, and members of the Wildcat Club who receive priority access.
Student Allocation and Future Game Incentives
The athletic department also offered a limited number of tickets specifically to students for $40 each. These highly sought-after student tickets were completely sold out within just 24 hours of being released.
Furthermore, any student who purchased a ticket for Saturday's game will receive a complimentary ticket for Monday night's championship game, should the Wildcats advance to the final contest.
Fan Excitement and Travel Realities
Sophia Reetz, the executive director of ZonaZoo, expressed the high level of enthusiasm among supporters traveling to Indianapolis. "Everybody is just so pumped," Reetz stated. She added that the goal is to replicate the intense atmosphere of McKale Center, noting, "Whenever you watch away games on TV, you can always hear the U of A chants... it's really cool to get this chance.”
The financial burden extends beyond the entry cost, as travel expenses are also significant. Fans looking to fly from Tucson on Friday and return on Sunday face flight costs ranging between $800 and $1,200, depending on the specific airline and departure/return times.
Superfan Commitment Despite Expense
Paul Volpe, a dedicated University of Arizona alumnus and superfan, is taking his entire family to witness the games. Volpe recalled being a senior the last time the Wildcats reached the Final Four and has already attended previous March Madness games in San Jose and San Diego this year.
Volpe described the shared experience among traveling fans as feeling like family, similar to being at McKale Center. He revealed that his family budgeted and saved to cover their trip, estimating the total cost to be at least $8,000. "Whether it was $8,000 or $8 I'd be there no matter what," Volpe affirmed.
Volpe maintains an extensive collection of Arizona merchandise, including chairs from previous Final Four appearances. He views his dedication as representative of the community: "It's just not a team. This is what Tucson's all about," he concluded.
