A two-year-old child is fighting for their life after a fall on board the Mein Schiff 7 cruise ship while docked in Funchal, Madeira.
Incident Details
The child sustained serious injuries after falling several metres, estimated to be between 10 and 13 feet, according to Portuguese press reports. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene and provided immediate medical attention.
Rapid Response
Upon receiving the alarm, Red Cross personnel and a specialized rapid intervention medical team were dispatched to the ship. The child was then transported to Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital for treatment.
Ship and Cruise Information
The Mein Schiff 7, launched in 2024 and flagged in Malta, was on a seven-day cruise that began in Gran Canaria on April 20th. The ship has a capacity of nearly 3,000 passengers and over 1,000 crew members.
Port Authority Statement
The Administration of the Ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira confirmed the incident, stating the child was taken to the hospital’s emergency department. They emphasized the activation of the Regional Integrated Medical Emergency System and the support provided by the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR).

Authorities have launched an internal inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall. The port authorities are refraining from releasing specific details about the child’s age, nationality, or the exact nature of the fall, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation.

Medical sources at Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital have reported that the toddler’s injuries are extremely severe and the child remains in critical condition. The focus is now on providing the best possible medical care and supporting the child’s family.
