Tiger Woods failed multiple field sobriety tests and was found in possession of two hydrocodone pills following his vehicle accident last week, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit released Tuesday. The documents detail that the golf superstar exhibited physical signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes, after the crash.

Details of the Arrest Affidavit

Woods' Explanation for the Accident

Woods, who is 50, informed investigators that he did not see the vehicle in front of him slow down. He attributed his inattention to looking at his cell phone while simultaneously attempting to change the radio station, the affidavit stated.

His Land Rover ultimately rolled onto its side after colliding with a Ford-F150 pickup truck that was towing a small trailer. The incident and subsequent arrest took place Friday afternoon near Woods' residence on Jupiter Island, Florida.

Discovery of Prescription Medication

During a search conducted following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI), property damage, and refusing a lawful test, deputies discovered two prescription opioid pills in his pants pocket. Woods confirmed to deputies that he had taken prescription medications earlier that day.

Signs of Impairment Noted by Deputies

Physical Observations

Martin County Sheriff John M. Budensiek confirmed that while Woods had not consumed alcohol—a fact verified by a breathalyzer test—DUI investigators observed clear signs of impairment at the scene. A deputy noted that Woods had glassy, bloodshot eyes and pupils that were extremely dilated.

Furthermore, the affidavit indicated that Woods was "sweating profusely" while attempting to complete the field sobriety evaluations. Deputy Tatiana Levenar reported that Woods' movements were "lethargic and slow," adding that she observed him "limping and stumbling to the right" while walking.

Medical History Disclosed

When questioned about existing medical conditions, the 82-time PGA Tour champion disclosed a history of seven back surgeries and at least 20 leg operations. He was observed wearing a compression sleeve over his right knee during the investigation.

Woods also cited physical limitations when asked to perform tasks. He advised deputies that he suffers from a limp and that his ankle seizes while walking. The report also documented that Woods "had hiccups during the entire investigation."

Historical Context of Woods' Driving Incidents

This recent event marks the fourth significant incident involving Woods behind the wheel since 2009. In May 2017, Woods was arrested on DUI suspicion and subsequently found to have five different drugs in his system, including hydrocodone and Dilaudid.

Following that 2017 arrest, Woods entered and completed treatment at a rehabilitation clinic. A car accident near his home around Thanksgiving 2009 led to a major scandal involving allegations of extramarital affairs, ultimately resulting in his divorce from Elin Nordegren.

Most recently, in 2021, Woods sustained severe injuries in a rollover crash near Rancho Palos Verdes the morning after hosting the Genesis Invitational. He required extrication from the wreckage of the Genesis GV80 SUV he was driving. Following that accident, Woods underwent a "long surgical procedure" on his lower right leg and ankle, which involved inserting a rod into his leg and placing screws in his foot and ankle.
