Tiger Woods Steps Away From Golf
Tiger Woods has formally declined the position of captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup, as he prioritizes his health and seeks treatment. The announcement came on Wednesday, following a week of developments related to a recent driving incident.
DUI Incident and Legal Proceedings
Woods entered a not guilty plea regarding suspicion of driving under the influence after his SUV collided with a trailer and overturned on Jupiter Island, Florida, last week. The incident occurred on a residential road near his home.
Seeking International Treatment
On Tuesday night, Woods released a statement announcing his indefinite break from golf “to seek treatment and focus on my health.” A motion filed by his attorney, Douglas Duncan, requested permission for Woods to travel outside the United States for “comprehensive inpatient treatment.”
Privacy Concerns Drive Decision
Duncan explained that the recommendation for international treatment stemmed from Woods’ “complex clinical presentation” and the need for a level of care unavailable domestically. He cited ongoing medical scrutiny and public exposure as barriers to effective treatment, stating they would lead to setbacks.
Martin County Court Judge Darren Steele approved the motion, though the location of the treatment facility remains undisclosed. Woods has previously sought inpatient treatment at facilities in Mississippi (2010) and following a 2017 DUI arrest.
Commitment to Recovery
“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” Woods stated. He previously declined the Ryder Cup captaincy offer in 2024, citing time constraints.
Ryder Cup Response
The PGA of America expressed full support for Woods’ decision. “The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being,” a statement read. “We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision.”
Keegan Bradley Remains Captain
Keegan Bradley was previously selected as captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup matches, which will be held on Long Island, New York. The PGA of America had set a deadline of the end of March for Woods to make a decision. Europe, captained by Luke Donald, has won the last two Ryder Cups, and Donald will lead the team for a third consecutive time.
