Three Face Murder Charges After Fatal Jail Assault
Three individuals currently housed at the Monterey County Jail have been formally booked on murder charges and related offenses following a deadly altercation within the facility this past weekend. The incident prompted a swift investigation by sheriff's deputies.
The discovery occurred around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning during a routine safety check and meal distribution. Correctional deputies located an adult male inmate who was unconscious and showed clear signs of having been assaulted.
Victim Identified and Life-Saving Efforts Fail
Jail staff and deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures at the scene. Paramedics and fire personnel were also called to assist, but tragically, the man could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the location.
The victim was officially identified by deputies as 30-year-old Abraham Camacho, a resident of Hayward. His death has now led to serious criminal charges against three fellow detainees.
Suspects Arrested and Charged
In an update released Monday afternoon, the sheriff's office named the three individuals arrested in connection with Camacho's death. They are 21-year-old Romeo Tejeda Gonzales of Greenfield, 19-year-old Marwuy Jose Centeno Camacho, and 20-year-old Elijah Herrera of Salinas.
All three have been booked on suspicion of murder, conspiracy to commit gang activity, and street gang enhancements. These charges reflect the severity of the incident within the jail environment.
Background of the Accused
The current charges are in addition to the reasons the suspects were already in custody. According to deputies, Tejeda Gonzales was being held on firearms charges.
Marwuy Jose Centeno Camacho was detained on multiple warrants, including a previous murder charge. Meanwhile, Elijah Herrera was being held on robbery and firearm-related charges.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The investigation into the precise cause of death is ongoing. The sheriff's office confirmed that the coroner's office in neighboring Santa Cruz County will conduct the necessary forensic examination.
