A judge in Harris County, Texas, is facing widespread criticism following a heated interaction with a courthouse IT staffer. The incident, captured on video, has quickly circulated online, drawing attention to the judge’s demeanor.
The Incident Unfolds
The video, which gained traction over the weekend, depicts Judge Nathan Milliron engaged in a tense exchange with an IT technician who was responding to a computer issue in the courtroom. The technician appeared to make a lighthearted comment, suggesting the issue was a “false alarm.”
Judge's Response
Judge Milliron responded sharply, stating, “No, it wasn’t a false alarm.” He then admonished the staffer, saying, “Don’t joke around. I’m serious about this. It was happening. Get out of my courtroom!” Following this, the judge was heard muttering to himself, “Jesus Christ, sick and tired of this today.”
Official Response and Background
Judge Milliron, who assumed his position in January 2025, declined to comment on the incident when approached in the courtroom on Monday. He also restricted camera access to his courtroom, where he was presiding over proceedings in the 215th District Court.
The Harris County District Court Administration confirmed the IT staffer is an employee of their department. Several judges, speaking anonymously, described the technician as helpful and well-regarded, often assisting judges with technical issues.
Expectations of Judicial Conduct
Retired judge Mike Schneider emphasized the high standard of behavior expected of judges. “Judges are required to be patient, dignified, and courteous to everyone. Witnesses, lawyers, anyone in their official capacity,” Schneider stated. He also noted that concerns regarding a judge’s conduct can be reported to the State Commission on Judicial Conduct for review.
Records indicate Judge Milliron has not been previously sanctioned by the commission, and the confidentiality of complaints means it’s unknown if any have been filed regarding this or other incidents. However, online searches reveal the judge has previously made controversial comments from the bench.
Administrative Statement
As an elected official, local court administrators lack the authority to directly discipline Judge Milliron. However, Judge Rabeea Collier, the civil court’s administrative judge, released a statement on Monday afternoon:
“We are aware of the concerns raised regarding recent widely circulated footage involving a member of our Civil Division. The conduct of everyone serving in the judicial system must reflect the professionalism, respect, and impartiality that the public rightly expects. While it would be inappropriate to comment on specific matters that may be subject to review, I want to assure the public that we take these concerns seriously. The Civil Trial Division is committed to maintaining a workplace grounded in respect and to upholding the integrity of the judicial process. There are established procedures to address concerns about judicial conduct, and those processes exist to ensure fairness, accountability, and due consideration of all relevant facts. In the meantime, our focus remains on serving the community with fairness, dignity, and respect for all who come before the Civil Division.”
