Texas Health Resources has unveiled a significant leadership transition plan, culminating in the retirement of its current Chief Executive Officer, Barclay Berdan, later this year. Berdan's departure will conclude an impactful tenure spanning four decades with the healthcare system.
Historic Leadership Shift Announced
The system's Board of Trustees made the announcement yesterday, confirming that current Chief Operating Officer, Winjie Miao, is set to assume the role of President beginning April 5.
Creating a Path to CEO Succession
The Board intentionally established the President position to designate the executive poised to take over the Chief Executive Officer duties at a future, unspecified date. This move sets the stage for a historic change within the 29-hospital system operating across 16 counties.
Winjie Miao will become the third CEO in Texas Health Resources' history. She will also be the first woman to hold the top executive role, following Berdan and the founding CEO, Doug Hawthorne, who retired in 2019 after 50 years of service.
Winjie Miao's Extensive Background
According to a news release on the Texas Health Resources website, Miao has served as Chief Operating Officer since 2022. In this capacity, she oversaw enterprise-wide operations spanning hospital, provider, and ambulatory settings.
Prior to her COO role, Miao served as Chief Experience Officer, where she championed a more consumer-centric approach to care delivery throughout the organization. She initially joined Texas Health Resources in the year 2000 and has since held numerous senior leadership positions.
Miao's Vision for Accessible Care
In a 2024 interview with D CEO, where she was recognized as one of the Dallas 500, Miao shared her aspirations for the healthcare industry. She stated, "My grandmother immigrated to this country when she was in her thirties and worked in a garment factory until her seventies. When our care processes – clinical, social, and administrative – are easily accessible and understood by my grandma, then I know we will have made progress."
Expanded Roles for Key Executives
As part of this broader leadership restructuring, the Board has also promoted Laura Irvine. Irvine is now taking on the title of Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating and Growth Officer.
Irvine's expanded responsibilities will concentrate on enterprise operations. This focus includes emphasizing the patient and care team experience while simultaneously supporting ongoing growth initiatives, such as geographic expansion and virtual services.
A New Era of Female Leadership
These executive changes signify a landmark moment for Texas Health, as two women will now lead the system. The organization boasts over 4,400 licensed hospital beds, approximately 6,400 physicians with active staff privileges, and nearly 29,000 employees.
Hunter Hunt, chair of the Texas Health Resources Board of Trustees, commented on the transition. He noted, “This transition reflects thoughtful planning by the Board and positions Texas Health Resources for continued stability and long-term success.” He added, “Barclay’s leadership has shaped this organization in enduring ways, and Winjie and Laura bring the experience and perspective needed to build on that foundation.”
