Police in Deptford Township, New Jersey, have apprehended an 18-year-old driver in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred on Monday evening. The crash resulted in the death of a bicyclist on Delsea Drive. Officials claim the driver fled the scene after the collision.

The suspect has been identified as Iqrar Ahmad, an 18-year-old resident of Deptford. Ahmad is accused of leaving the location after allegedly striking the cyclist late Monday night. The incident prompted a multi-hour closure of Delsea Drive near Brenner Avenue as authorities conducted their investigation.

Sequence of Events Revealed by Police

The incident reportedly took place around 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Police stated that an initial driver contacted 9-1-1 to report striking a bicyclist with their vehicle.

This first driver did stop immediately following impact. However, following the initial collision, the bicyclist fell into the roadway. Tragically, the victim was then fatally struck by a second vehicle traveling along Delsea Drive.

Driver Flees Scene, Later Returns

The driver of that second vehicle, identified by police as Iqrar Ahmad, allegedly continued driving away from the fatal scene. Police stated that Ahmad left the area, traveling further north along Delsea Drive.

Approximately two hours later, officials claim Ahmad returned to the crash site. This return reportedly occurred after he had spoken with a family member about the incident.

Ahmad's Account to Authorities

Upon returning, Ahmad reportedly told officers that he left after feeling his vehicle strike an object while observing a bike and a car on the roadside. Investigators noted that Ahmad stopped later to inspect his car, discovering damage to the lower grill.

Despite finding the damage, Ahmad told police he did not know what object his vehicle had struck during the initial event.
