Tesla Showroom in Sydney Targeted in Arson Attack
A fire at a Tesla showroom in Sydney, Australia, earlier this week resulted in significant damage to several vehicles. Authorities have confirmed the blaze was deliberately set, ruling out initial concerns about the electric vehicle batteries being the source of the fire.
Details of the Incident
The fire began around 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday. Footage shows flames quickly spreading from beneath Model 3 sedans and a Model Y, escalating rapidly into a larger inferno. At least three Tesla vehicles were completely destroyed by the flames.
Firefighters Respond
Approximately 45 firefighters from Fire Rescue NSW were dispatched to the scene. They successfully extinguished the fire before it could spread to the ceiling of the facility. Aaron Ross from Fire Rescue NSW stated, “We dispatched a pretty heavy weight of attack on this fire, it did extend into the ceiling space, but we were able to quickly contain the fire to the area of origin.” He also noted, “It is quite obvious…that these fires have started at the front of some of these vehicles.”
Evidence Points to Arson
Investigators discovered several jerry cans positioned near the burnt vehicles, immediately indicating the fire was not accidental. This discovery quickly ruled out the possibility of the fire originating within the EVs’ battery packs.
Recent Trend of Attacks
Fire bombings and vandalism targeting Tesla showrooms and vehicles have increased in recent years, though incidents had recently subsided. These attacks have occurred globally, coinciding with Elon Musk’s public endorsements and financial backing of political figures, including a $250 million investment in support of President Trump’s re-election campaign.
Investigation Ongoing
The motivation behind the arson attack remains unclear. Authorities are continuing their investigation and seeking to identify those responsible. The exact cause and potential links to previous incidents are still under investigation.
