Priceless Artifact Recovered After Year-Long Search
Dutch authorities announced Thursday the recovery of a priceless ancient golden helmet stolen from a museum in the Netherlands last year. The 2,500-year-old Cotofenesti helmet, a revered national treasure from Romania’s Dacia civilization, was unveiled during a press conference in Assen, Netherlands.
Details of the Recovery
The helmet was stolen in January 2025 during the final weekend of a six-month exhibition at the Drents Museum. Thieves broke into the museum and also took three golden wristbands. There were initial concerns the helmet might be melted down due to its notoriety making it difficult to sell.
A Collaborative Effort
Corien Fahner of the prosecution service expressed relief, stating, “We are incredibly pleased. It has been a roller-coaster. Especially for Romania, but also for employees of the Drents Museum.” The recovery was part of a deal reached with three men arrested shortly after the heist, and their trial is scheduled to begin later in April.
Condition of the Artifact
Two of the three stolen armbands were also recovered. Drents Museum director Robert van Langh confirmed the helmet sustained minor damage. “The helmet is slightly dented, but there will be no permanent damage,” he said. “The armbands are in perfect condition.”
How the Theft Occurred
Thieves employed a homemade firework bomb and a sledgehammer to gain entry to the museum. Security footage showed the perpetrators using a crowbar and an explosion to breach the museum’s defenses.
National Significance
Romanian Justice Minister Radu Marinescu previously described the theft as a “crime against our state,” emphasizing the importance of recovering the artifacts. The recovery marks a significant victory for both Dutch and Romanian authorities.
