A new keychain, dubbed Starboy, is making waves not for what it does, but for what it doesn’t. Created by one of Starboy's creators, Daniel Kuntz, the device ranges in price from $200 to $440 and is positioned as a deliberate rejection of the “life-changing” promises often made by AI-powered gadgets.
A Purposefully Pointless Gadget
Kuntz describes Starboy as a “f*ck you” to the AI gadget industry. He argues that many devices strive to improve your life, but often fall short. Starboy, in contrast, intentionally does… very little. “It’s never going to connect to your phone,” Kuntz told Gizmodo, emphasizing a “spiritual, aesthetic decision” over practicality.
How Does It Work?
Despite its limited functionality, Starboy isn’t entirely inert. It features an OLED display showing an emotive cartoon face, designed by a former Disney animator, and a camera to recognize gestures. Shaking Starboy makes it “dizzy,” while a temperature sensor causes it to “shiver” when frozen. A thumbs-up gesture displays the keychain’s battery life.
Rejecting the AI Hype
The team behind Starboy intentionally avoids using the term “AI” in its marketing, despite the device utilizing AI for facial and gesture recognition. Kuntz sees the current AI landscape as “hopelessly mimetic,” with companies blindly copying each other. He contrasts Starboy with failed AI ventures like the Humane Ai Pin, which was recently acquired by HP.
A Statement on Consumerism
Kuntz defends the high price tag, suggesting it’s akin to purchasing a luxury item like a Porsche 911. He believes there’s value in creating a tech product simply for the sake of creation, without the pressure of constant improvement or added features like subscriptions. Future plans include Bluetooth communication between Starboys, with each device featuring a unique face from 5,000 variations.
Early Impressions and Future Outlook
During a 30-minute demo, the device occasionally struggled to recognize faces and gestures, leading to delays in interaction. However, Kuntz acknowledges the need for fine-tuning. Starboy is currently available for purchase, offering a unique – and expensive – alternative to the increasingly complex world of AI gadgets.
