'Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord' Gets Second Season

Lucasfilm has officially renewed the Star Wars series Maul - Shadow Lord for a second season, prior to the debut of its first season on Disney+. The announcement was made by Lucasfilm President & Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni.

Setting the Stage: The Dark Times

The series is set immediately after Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, during the period known as the Dark Times. This era follows the fall of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire. The show will focus on the former Sith apprentice, Darth Maul, and his activities during this tumultuous time.

Introducing Devon Izara

The first season will introduce Devon Izara, a Force-sensitive apprentice and survivor of Order 66. Izara is a Twi’lek, initially leading to speculation among fans that she might be Darth Talon, a character George Lucas had considered for his sequel trilogy. However, Star Wars has confirmed that Izara is a new character.

Fan Expectations and George Lucas's Vision

Fans have long requested the appearance of Darth Talon in live-action Star Wars media. George Lucas had reportedly envisioned Darth Maul and Darth Talon as antagonists in his original sequel trilogy plans before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm.

Maul's Fate and Story Arc

Despite Darth Maul’s eventual death at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi, as established in Star Wars Rebels, the series will explore his activities during the Dark Times. Previous appearances, such as his cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, have shown Maul successfully leading a crime syndicate.

Palpatine's Shadow and Vengeance

A recent trailer featured a voiceover from Palpatine, stating that Maul has been replaced. This suggests the series will delve into Maul’s rage and desire for vengeance following his abandonment by Palpatine, continuing the storyline from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Premiere Details

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord will premiere with a two-part episode on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. The series is rated TV-PG and falls under the Animation, Sci-Fi, Adventure, and Drama genres. Brad Rau is directing the series.
